A Generation of Achievements
This photo essay highlights some of 1199SEIU's major achievements since 1986, when the Save Our Union (SOU) slate of candidates won a hard-fought union electionto assume leadership of our Union. Dennis Rivera, a key SOU leader was elected to a vice presidency on the slate along with Georgiana Johnson, who won the presidency, and Eddie Kaye, elected Secretary Treasurer. In 1989, Rivera succeeded Johnson as president. In that post, which he held until this past June, Rivera led 1199SEIU to new heights.  GROUNDBREAKING CONTRACT VICTORIES Shortly after Rivera’s election as president in 1989, 1199 won a groundbreaking three-year contract when New York Cardinal John O’Connor (right) broke with the League of Voluntary Hospitals and Homes. The contract established a pattern which 1199SEIU has built upon in subsequent years. At left is attorney Basil Paterson. More »
