British Occupational Therapists Visit New York
Eight Occupational Therapists, members of the British union, Unison, visited New York in March 2006 to exchange information, do research, and share information about the OT field in the U.S. and in Great Britain. The visit was sponsored by the Local 1180, Communications Workers of America (CWA). The group included staff OT’s, a trade union official, an administrator and an academic. They met at Roosevelt Hospital with Senior OT, Reg., Maria Fernandez, psychiatric OT Mary Beth Maquiran, both 1199SEIU members, and with Carol Birnbaum, OTR, an 1199SEIU retiree who still works part-time in the home care field. The Roosevelt visit was a smashing success, “spot on” as the British would say. The visit was followed by smaller teams meeting with the OT administrator, Audrey Ehrmann, with Mary Beth Maquiran, and with Carol Birnbaum. The day was directed by Ezra Birnbaum of the 1199SEIU Professional and Technical Department.
