1199 Physician Assistants On the Move
Queens Hospital Center PA Negotiating Team conferring It has been a very exciting year for the 1199SEIU Physician Assistants. During the past year, the Union has successfully organized new units at several of our HHC affiliate hospitals, including Harlem Hospital, Lincoln Hospital, Woodhull Hospital, and Queens Hospital Center. We also recently won a very good first contract at Harlem Hospital that allows Physician Assistants to retain Officer status with Columbia University, the affiliate institution. Once approved by HHC, the new contract also will result in improved working conditions and salary increases. Congratulations to Betty Hughley, Executive Vice President of HS IV and the entire Harlem Hospital Negotiation Team. We are also negotiating the first contract at Queens Hospital Center under the direction of Angela Doyle, Vice President of the Mt. Sinai/NYU Network and Henry Williams, Organizer. The Negotiation Team at Queens Hospital Center, led by PA’s Patti Cuartas and George Skulikidis, has worked extremely hard developing their proposals and continues to be enthusiastic about significantly improving the working conditions at the institution. The Negotiation Committees at Lincoln and Woodhull Hospitals are also hard at work developing their proposals and will soon be moving into their first negotiation sessions. Also in March there was a citywide meeting of physician assistants at 1199 Headquarters in New York. Thirty Physician Assistants, representing 11 hospitals in New York City, engaged in a lively discussion and exchange of ideas. The meeting made clear that the Physician Assistants are ready to get down to work to set and define uniform minimum contract standards and deal with the issues related to the difficulties of obtaining continuing medical education. Several Physician Assistants signed up to work on both the Physician Assistant Council and the Physician Assistant Continuing Medical Education Committee. We are planning to have our first Physician Council and Physician Assistant Continuing Medical Education Committee meetings in mid-June. If you are a Physician Assistant and are interested in working on either the Physician Assistant Council and/or the Physician Assistant Continuing Medical Education Committee, please call or e-mail Cynthia Wolff, ProTech Specialist at (212) 261-2368 or Cynthiaw@1199.org.
