"While preparing for our future, 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East is committed to opening doors for YOU....today's young leaders" -Maria Castaneda - Secretary Treasurer

The Young Worker Program is a hands-on program for members age 30 and under, which focuses on Labor Education, Social Justice, and Skill Development. Through art, education, and action, the program creates a space to explore personal goals and our roles in social change as union members. Meet people and get empowered!

Young Worker Program Committee – This is the core of YWP. Committees are forming in institutions and agencies throughout 1199SEIU UHE. YWP committee members come together to share experiences, have fun, learn from each other, and take action together. City and town based committee meetings assist committee members in forming committees in the institution/agency, and provide a glimpse of what YWP is doing in other places.

DV8 – A reoccurring social event with an educational twist. Members and friends are invited to have fun together and go home with new knowledge and new friends. DV8 also celebrates your talents on stage and off! DV8 submissions - Share your stories, news articles, reviews, music, visual art, or poetry to be posted in our next newsletter or online. Send your submissions to youngvoices@1199.org

Education and Development – The Young Worker Program offers workshops and trainings to support the development of young members like you! Workshops range from Union 101 to Financial Management. There is also an intensive leadership development training offered to members curious about organizing, called Labor Education and Activist Development (LEAD).

“In March 2001, 43 percent of young adults faced unemployment; part-time work for economic reasons; inadequate weekly earnings; joblessness not captured in the official unemployment count because the individual had stopped looking for work; By comparison, just 20 percent of older adults (ages 25 and above) experienced one of these labor market problems.” – Institute for Youth Education and Families
