1199SEIU ENDORSES CUOMO FOR RE-ELECTION

February 22, 2018

New York, NY – 1199 SEIU today enthusiastically endorsed Governor Andrew M. Cuomo for re-election citing the Governor’s leadership in protecting working families, and his commitment to strengthening worker protections even as President Trump and Washington Republicans are waging an unprecedented war on worker rights and healthcare access.

1199 SEIU is the largest union in New York, and the largest healthcare union in the nation.

“From cuts to healthcare coverage, to attacks on collective bargaining, the Trump Administration has declared war on the worker protections that have sustained families for generations.  New Yorkers need elected leaders willing to fight to improve conditions for working families, and Governor Cuomo has done just that,” said George Gresham, President of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East.He has been a true advocate for healthcare workers, standing with us in the fights to increase the minimum wage, for higher wages for homecare workers, and in the fight to secure Paid Family Leave. Governor Cuomo has been on the front lines with us, and the working men and women of 1199SEIU are proud to endorse him for re-election.”

“People see what is happening in Washington. They see how Republicans have prioritized tax cuts for hedge fund managers at the expense of the working class,” said Governor Andrew Cuomo.  “They are concerned that no one is looking out for them. We’re here to send them a message: We hear you. All New York hears you. And alongside 1199, we have beaten the odds on issue after issue and delivered tremendous results for New York’s working class. I am humbled to have earned their support and grateful for the opportunity to build on what we’ve started.”

The announcement was made today during a rally, where thousands of 1199SEIU healthcare workers and their families gathered to push back against threats to good jobs and community care, and cuts to pension and healthcare benefits.
