Fight for $15

Members of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East are once again using their hearts, minds and feet to get out the vote for candidates who advocate quality healthcare, good jobs, and economic and social justice. The union is well-known for educating its members before an election by deploying hundreds of healthcare worker volunteers to knock on doors and discuss candidate positions on issues of importance to working families.

“Our 1199SEIU Troy slate, with mayoral candidate Rodney Wiltshire at the top of the ticket, recognizes that a strong community and local economy require that healthcare jobs are good middle class jobs. And to achieve that, workers must be able to join unions and bargain collectively for wages, working conditions and benefits, without intimidation. They know that if we want the best care for our families and our communities, we need a stable healthcare workforce,” said 1199SEIU Regional Political Director, Antonella Petchel.

The 1199SEIU endorsed candidates in Troy are:

Mayor: Rodney Wiltshire

Troy City Council At-Large: Anasha Cummings, Peggy Kownack, David Martin

Troy City Council: Jessica Ashley-ED 1, Anastasia Robertson-ED 2, Robert Doherty-ED 4,

David Bissember-ED 5, Corey Jenkins-ED 6

Maria Kercado, 1199SEIU Executive Vice President in the Capital Region/Hudson Valley said, “All of our 1199 candidates support the struggle of low-wage workers to improve their lives. Thousands of these jobs are held by home health aides, home attendants and nursing home workers, who can barely make ends meet for their families. Rodney Wiltshire and the 1199-endorsed city council candidates are on the side of the dedicated workers who care for the frail and elderly -- and who deserve to be paid at least $15 an hour and to have a union."

“These candidates are community leaders with a record of standing up for Troy families,” said Kevin Finnegan, 1199SEIU’s Political Director. "We look forward to working with them in our efforts to advance quality patient care, stable living wage jobs, and affordable communities."

In addition to the door-to-door canvassing program, 1199SEIU members in Troy are receiving mailers, phone calls, e-mails and text messages that discuss the candidates’ records and positions and also include reminders that election day is on Thursday, September 10.
