New York- On Wednesday, April 15, thousands of homecare workers, outpatient clinic workers, Rite Aid workers and other caregivers will be rallying and marching as part of the Fight For $15 nationwide day of actions. As the population ages, homecare has become the fastest-growing job in America, and healthcare is the fastest-growing industry. Homecare workers play a vital role, allowing seniors and people with disabilities to live with safety, dignity and independence in their own homes. In New York, because many homecare workers are members of 1199SEIU, they are compensated better than their counterparts elsewhere and have health benefits. Still, 1199SEIU homecare workers receive only about $10 an hour and many are mired in poverty even if they care for multiple clients. Homecare and healthcare jobs are the jobs of the future, and caregivers are demanding that they are good, middle-class careers for New Yorkers. A living wage for homecare workers would also improve workforce recruitment and retention, thereby improving the quality and continuity of patient care.
