Our Fight for $15 continues in 2016
January 22, 2016
Remember how this campaign started 3 years ago? When fast food workers in New York went on strike and took the streets to demand a minimum wage of $15/hour? Many thought they were crazy and that it was impossible to win.
Today, thousands of workers in the state of New York and dozens of cities throughout the country are already making at least $15 an hour thanks to courageous, hardworking Americans like you who stood up to demand a living wage. It is possible!
In 2015, the Fight for $15 grew more than ever, especially for us. Caregivers from all over the country joined this inspiring movement to make sure our families don’t have to struggle to make ends meet.
Florida’s caregivers not only led rallies and marches in the streets, and pushed the issue into the Presidential race, but also took the Fight for $15 to their hospitals and nursing homes.
Join us to win $15 in 2016…
Nov2015_Plaza_BuryPovertyWages_100x100.jpgEnd Plaza Poverty Pay: Certified nursing assistants and others with decades of loyal service caring for seniors and people living with disabilities at Plaza Health Network-owned nursing homes in Miami-Dade County are still making less than $15 per hour, which is not enough to support a family. Also, Plaza cut staffing and reduced the amount of time caregivers have to provide bedside care which can put seniors and people living with a disability at risk. In late January, our 1199SEIU Bargaining Committee reached a Tentative Agreement with Plaza Health Network that could lead to significant raises. However, Plaza members will continue fighting to raise the minimum wage for all workers in Florida.

However, its caregivers are struggling to take care of their families on Consulate’s poverty wages. The money is there to pay caregivers a living wage of $15/hour or more. If you are a Consulate worker, contact your Delegate to send a letter telling Consulate that it MUST reinvest in its facilities and its caregivers because they deserve a living wage of $15 an hour and the residents deserve quality care.
