Springfield home care worker to join roundtable with Hillary Clinton

Kindalay Cummings-Akers to be one of eight speaking to Clinton about importance of affordable long-term care

BOSTON, MA (August 6, 2015) -- Springfield home care worker Kindalay Cummings-Akers will meet with Democratic presidential candidate and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in an eight-person roundtable in Los Angeles today at 6:30 p.m. E.T.

Cummings-Akers is one of a select group of caretakers and consumers to sit with Clinton in a small roundtable discussion Thursday afternoon at the Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. Cummings, a member of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, will emphasize the need for delivering quality home care that allows older Americans and people with disabilities to live at home with dignity.

Cummings, who has been working in healthcare for 25 years with the last seven years as a Personal Care Attendant, is a caretaker for a 72-year-old receiving health care through MassHealth. She is one of 35,000 caretakers who make $13.38 per hour providing a wide array of care – from cooking and cleaning to providing medical care – to ensure that men and women can live independently at home.

Cummings-Akers's personal care attendant income is her sole source of income, and she and her husband work hard to cover expenses for their four children and four grandchildren.

Some 19 million seniors need long term care supports and services, and that number is set to nearly double by 2050. But only about 2 million people make up the workforce available to care for these older Americans—and the gap is growing.

The event will be streamed live on the front page at: www.seiu.org/
