Required 10-Day Notice Delivered Late Last Week

Date of Picket: Wednesday, July 19 at 1 p.m.-4 p.m.

Location: 4101 E Genesee St., DeWitt, NY

Central New York nursing home workers at the Jewish Home delivered a 10-day notice to the employer late last week, stating their intent to hold an informational picket in front of the facility on July 19 from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. 1199SEIU members have been trying to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement with the Home since June, to no avail.

The 1199 negotiations committee, representing more than 200 workers, is discouraged with the pace of the negotiations, and the consistent fight with management to improve wages and protect benefits.

At the picket, 1199 members want to have a conversation with the public about the Home’s current priorities that appear to put building aesthetics and profits over a dedicated workforce and quality care for residents.

“Our goal is to move forward, not backwards. We work hard to keep this place running,” said Nancy Rockwell, a C.N.A. at the Jewish Home. “Our work must be valued. After all, a fancy building without caregivers is just a fancy building. The workers provide the care, comfort and services to people who need it most.”

Bargaining is scheduled for Monday, July 17.

An informational picket is not a strike or work-stoppage. It is strictly informational and designed to publicize the fact that a dispute exists with the employer. Workers participate in the picket only during their time off.
