June 19, 2018
On June 14, 2018, 61 caregivers at multiple Mentor Health facilities voted overwhelmingly to join the 1199SEIU family.
The Mentor Health facilities are located throughout Florida and serve disabled individuals. The caregivers faced a strong anti-union campaign, but the workers stood strong and courageous.
Mona Ocean, a caregiver from Mentor said, “We needed to form a union to help us secure our rights. There is more power when we fight together.”
Somielle Francois, another caregiver joined 1199 because, “A united front will help us secure better treatment from management, raises and respect on the job.”
With the support of 1199SEIU, the Mentor caregivers are confident that they will achieve significant improvements for both themselves and their residents.
1199SEIU is the largest healthcare workers’ union in the US, with more than 420,000 members in five states along the Eastern seaboard. We are one of the fastest growing unions in the country.
As well as having a larger say in their working lives, the newest members at Mentor Health voted to join our union to ensure fair treatment and regular wage increases.
