“Florida’s election results displayed some of the very best aspects of our democracy and some of the very worst of politics in our state. It was inspiring to see the energy and overwhelming engagement of our 1199SEIU members and working Floridians who came together, volunteered and voted for critical issues that impact their families, freedoms and well-being.

“This effort was crucial in electing numerous strong candidates and in garnering a clear majority, 57 percent of voters, in favor of Amendment 4 to roll back Florida’s dangerous abortion ban.

However, this amendment vote also represents the foulest of Florida politics, as the measure fell short of the extreme 60 percent threshold put in place by the Republican legislature and governor’s office. As well, unprecedented government overreach, intimidation and our own tax dollars were used against this citizen initiative supported by the people.

“Sadly, suppressing the voices and votes of Floridians on many issues has become the signature of the Tallahassee GOP majority for the past 20 years.

“But working Floridians such as our 1199SEIU family will keep on fighting.  We will hold politicians accountable and work even harder to elect new leaders who will respect and serve us. I’m extremely proud of the progress and mettle our members and supporters achieved this year in the face of monumental disadvantages and electoral disappointments. And, most importantly, their commitment to building a better Florida for all in the future.”
