Health Care for All

You may have heard that this morning, the Attorney General’s office has certified the 1199SEIU-backed Massachusetts Fair Health Care Pricing Act and Massachusetts Equitable Health Care Pricing Act ballot initiative petitions. Below is a statement from Tim Foley, Political Director of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, on today’s certification:

“Today’s certification is good news for quality, affordable healthcare. Every study indicates that the care patients receive at hospitals in Brockton or Fall River or Springfield is equal to the care they get for the same procedure in Boston – the only thing that is different is the price you pay. By voting ‘yes’ on this question, voters will allow their community hospitals to receive fair pay for good quality healthcare, protect healthcare jobs, and lower the cost of healthcare overall across the state. For too long, Partners Healthcare’s market clout has deprived Massachusetts of the chance to lower healthcare spending and level the financial playing field between a select few rich Boston hospitals and the community hospitals that serve the majority of patients throughout the state. Too many good community hospitals are facing financial challenges that can be fixed by simply spending our healthcare dollars fairly. That is what this question will do. Now voters are one step closer to having the opportunity to weigh in on this important issue and prevent the bulk of our healthcare funds from going to a handful of hospitals.”
