October 31, 2013

On November 4, when Maryland State Delegate Veronica Turner announced she's running for State Senate, 1199 members came out in force with a strong show of support. Before becoming a member of the Maryland General Assembly, Turner spent 30 years as a clinical specialist at Prince George's Hospital and as a leader in her union, which would eventually merge with 1199SEIU. As a state delegate, she fought to keep Dimensions Healthcare System, the county's safety net hospitals, open and to secure funding for a new state-of-the-art hospital in the region."We need a leader in the Senate who understands health care, and who knows what needs to be done to keep us moving forward; that leader is Veronica Turner," said 1199 member Rita Jensen, RN, a District 26 resident who has worked at Prince George's Hospital for more than 20 years. In her ten years in the Maryland General Assembly, Turner has been a champion for her district, advocating good jobs, improved education and recreational facilities, and responsible development. As a member of the Health and Government Operations Committee, she helped expand healthcare to tens of thousands of Marylanders.- See more at: http://www.1199seiu.org/1199ers_support_del_veronica_turner_for_maryland_state_senate#sthash.rjwRwenj.dpuf
