D.C.'s Stay-at-Home Order:

Brief Summary:

Mayor Bowser has issued a Stay at Home order for the District of Columbia, which goes into effect on April 1, 2020 at 12:01am and remains in effect until April 24, 2020.

District residents may only leave their residences to:

  1. Engage in essential activities, including obtaining medical care that cannot be provided through telehealth and obtaining food and essential household goods;
     
  2. Perform or access essential governmental functions;
     
  3. Work at essential businesses;
     
  4. Engage in essential travel; or
     
  5. Engage in allowable recreational activities, as defined by the Mayor’s Order.

What’s open?:

  1. Mayor Bowser ordered all non-essential business to close until April 24, 2020.

WMATA Metro and Metro Bus updates:

  1. Trains will operate every 20 minutes on all lines except the Red Line, which will operate every 15 minutes.

  2. Several train stations are closed. See here for a full list.

  3. Several bus lines have been cut. See here for a full list.

  4. Beginning Tuesday (3/24), all Metrobus customers will enter and exit the bus using the REAR doors only, except customers who require use of a wheelchair ramp, which remains available at the front door. Metro is also temporarily suspending fare collection on Metrobus, because all farebox and SmarTrip equipment is located at the front door.

Emergency Protective Laws:

  1. No evictions or late fees for residential and commercial tenants
     
  2. No utility shut-offs for non-payment
     
  3. Extended public benefit programs such as the Healthcare Alliance, TANF, and SNAP - if they are set to expire in March or April, they will be automatically renewed. 
     
  4. No price-gouging for supplies
     
  5. Extended deadlines for drivers licenses & professional licenses:
     
  6. Unemployment benefits for people unemployed due to COVID-19

Work & health:

  1. Family Medical Leave 1-year employment and 1,000 hour work requirement shall not apply to an employee who has been ordered or recommended to quarantine or isolate due to COVID-19. More info here.
