On Saturday, January 28, 1199SEIU members and Carney Hospital management came together to promote new services being offered at Carney Hospital, located in Dorchester, a neighborhood of Boston.

Carney Hospital, a member of the Steward Health System, has undergone an overhaul as the health system recently invested more than $10 million into the facility. Union members, members of hospital management, doctors, and elected officials canvassed Dorchester, going door-to-door and informing residents of the new services offered at the facility and reminding people of the importance of the hospital.

“There are a lot of new things at Carney Hospital and [Dorchester residents] should come back and try us again,” said Karl Odom, an 1199SEIU member who participated in the canvass.

Before the canvass kicked off, Senator Jack Hart and Boston City Councilors Frank Baker and Felix Arroyo spoke about the importance of Carney Hospital in the Dorchester community. Councilor Baker even declared that he had switched his primary care physician to Carney Hospital in an effort to demonstrate his loyalty to the facility.Community_Canvassing_Jan_2012_044.jpg

1199SEIU Vice President Enid Eckstein called the hospital an “undiscovered gem” and emphasized the fact that canvas participants are really dedicated to promoting the life-saving services of the hospital: “We are campaigning for the hospital, we are campaigning for quality care, we are campaigning for the patients.”

Mary Tod, an 1199SEIU member at the facility, said that it was inspiring to see the more than 60 participants come out on a Saturday morning in support of Carney.

"I’m really excited that management, labor, and the doctors are getting out to get the word out and it really shows how much people care about this hospital and want it to survive and thrive,” she said.
