WHERE: Corning Center for Rehabilitation & Nursing, 205 E 1st St, Corning, New York

WHY: More than 100 nursing home workers at Corning Center for Rehabilitation & Nursing in Corning will hold an informational picket on Wednesday, July 13th from 1:00pm-4:00pm in demand for better wages. Long-term caregivers have been working without a union contract since May 31st following a one-month extension of their 18-month contract. Healthcare workers are represented by 1199SEIU, United Healthcare Workers East, the largest healthcare union in the country.

"We do over the top and more than expected,” said Cody Austin, Housekeeper. “I see people who do the same exact thing as we do and they get paid more than us. If we don't clean, our residents could get sick. We are here to make our residents happy," said Austin.

Picketing workers join more than 1,000 long-term caregivers in Western New York at 9 facilities who are holding one-day strikes July 12th and July 13th in demand for fair wages including higher starting rates for new workers, wage scales to retain experienced workers, and a $15 minimum for service workers.

Long-term caregivers at Corning Center work as Certified Nurse Assistants, Licensed Practical Nurses, Dietary Aides, Cooks, Activity Aides, Housekeeping, Maintenance Workers, and Van Drivers.
