Statement from Coy Jones of 1199SEIU On Election Results

August 22, 2024

“This week’s election was a testament to what working people can achieve when they stand together. The healthcare workers of 1199SEIU Florida along with other SEIU members, partners and supporters helped deliver victories for more than 80 percent of our endorsed candidates, with several more in great shape to win in runoffs.

Our success spanned the entire length of the state, from zero losses in numerous large Miami races including Miami-Dade Mayor Daniela Levine Cava, to our SEIU family member Maria Revelles in Orlando and a dominant win by our partner and champion State Rep. Angie Nixon in Jacksonville.  In several school board elections across Florida, we helped turn away extremist candidates who were bent on using our public tax dollars to ban books and force their own personal ideologies on our children.”

It was an excellent election night, but it took a great deal of dedication and focus. Our members spent many hours working phones, knocking on doors and other activities to get out the vote.  We’re committed to an even greater effort leading up to the November elections that will have profound consequences for our families, communities, state and nation.  But hard work and a devotion to a job well done comes naturally to our 11199SEIU caregivers and union members, so we’re excited to charge on to even more success on election day this November.”
