Statement of George Gresham, President of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East:
April 7, 2022
“The healthcare workers of 1199SEIU celebrate today’s historic confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the US Supreme Court. Judge Jackson is an exceptionally qualified jurist with a lifelong record of defending constitutional principles and upholding the rights of all people.
“At a time when the foundations of our democracy are under threat, and decades of progress on civil and voting rights are being undone across the county, it was vitally important that this confirmation succeed. Judge Jackson’s impartiality and commitment to truth are essential characteristics of a Supreme Court Justice. We congratulate the legislators who moved this confirmation, and especially those who put aside partisan politics to support Judge Jackson based on her indisputable qualifications.
“Judge Jackson’s confirmation is, of course, also profoundly inspiring. Two hundred and thirty-three years after the Supreme Court’s establishment, we finally have a Black woman serving on this highest seat. It matters to have a Justice who understands, deeply and personally, the immense inequities that Black women continue to face in our country. As a union of caregivers, the majority of whom are women and people of color, we know that Judge Jackson’s appointment will inspire future generations in the pursuit of equality and justice.”
