Statement of George Gresham, President of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, the nation’s largest healthcare union:

“1199SEIU condemns in the strongest terms Russia’s unprovoked and completely unjustifiable attack on the Ukrainian people. As a Union of 450,000 healthcare workers—many of whom hail from countries wracked by ongoing conflict, including Ukraine—we know the terrible human consequences of war. The greatest toll is paid in innocent lives—children, the elderly, the sick and vulnerable.

“As healthcare workers, we are gravely concerned by the impending collapse of Ukraine’s health infrastructure and the medical crisis that would inevitably ensue. The danger is compounded by the ongoing pandemic, made worse by the crowding of train stations, shelters, and other congregate places where infectious diseases flourish. Reports of Russian attacks on healthcare centers and the use of banned munitions such as cluster bombs are ghastly war crimes that must be resoundingly condemned by the international community.

“For decades, 1199SEIU has staunchly opposed war across the globe, and has proudly committed resources to supporting victims of state violence and persecution. The world must come together to provide concrete support for the millions of displaced people in Ukraine. At the same time, we must not forget those affected by ongoing conflict in Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Haiti, Myanmar, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, and elsewhere. We must foster improved international cooperation to safeguard refugees of all nations.

“The members of 1199SEIU stand proudly with the Ukrainian people and demand an immediate cessation of violence and the withdrawal of Russian forces from the country.”
