Boston, MA (January 31, 2017) – 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East and Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital announced today agreement on a free and fair elections process that allows specific workers to decide on their own whether or not to join 1199SEIU. In response, Tyrék D. Lee, Sr., Executive Vice President of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, issued the following statement:
“We have developed an agreement with Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital that outlines a free and fair elections process and offers service workers in specific units of the hospital’s workforce the opportunity to vote for or against joining our union. This agreement is another important step in our ongoing advocacy to ensure all workers – including those not yet unionized – have good jobs, fair wages and respect, dignity and a voice in the workplace.
As healthcare workers, we know that quality care is directly linked to quality jobs. Throughout our organizing campaign, we hope to demonstrate our union difference to the approximately 500 service workers at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital – that uniting with over 56,000 1199SEIU healthcare workers across Massachusetts and more than 450,000 on the East Coast gives us the stability, strength and voice to better advocate for ourselves and our families while providing the quality care our patients need and deserve.
We look forward to our continued collaboration with Dr. Gustafson and his team as we implement a free and fair election process that allows workers to make their own decisions about whether or not to join 1199SEIU.”
