Calls on MacArthur to “Protect Our Families” and Vote Against “disaster” Tax Plan

A radio ad released this week by 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East urges that Rep. Tom MacArthur vote against the Republican tax bill “disaster” that House and Senate leadership haphazardly shoved through Congress.

The Republican from Toms River was the only member of the state’s congressional delegation to vote for the measure, which could hike taxes on many working poor and middle-class families in New Jersey. Lawmakers are revising the bill before a final vote. The radio spot is being broadcast throughout the week on New York and Philadelphia stations that reach the NJ market. It highlights how limiting State and Local Tax (SALT) deductions will hike taxes on hardworking New Jersey families to “fund huge tax breaks for big corporations and the wealthiest one percent.”

“The bill was largely crafted in secret to benefit well-heeled special interests,” said Milly Silva, executive vice president at 1199SEIU Healthcare Workers East. “Independent analysis has shown it will increase taxes on the middle-class and working poor, cost millions of people access to healthcare, and cause the deficit to balloon. We can’t afford it and neither can our children. Representatives who support legislation opposed to the interests of their constituents will face a reckoning at the polls in 2018.”

The script of the 30-second spot entitled “Disaster,” is below:

Washington politicians are trying to ram through a tax bill that will be a straight up disaster for New Jersey families.

We need Congressman MacArthur to vote no.

The bill takes money from middle-class families to fund huge tax breaks for big corporations and the wealthiest one percent. It even eliminates deductions for state and local taxes, so some families will pay higher taxes.

Congressman MacArthur, protect our families. Vote no on the tax bill.
