Statement on Blockings of Muslim Ban by Two Judges
October 19, 2017
One would think President Donald Trump would tire of trying to enact a travel ban against visitors from six predominantly Muslim countries. After all, he’s gone to the well three times, and each time he’s been rebuffed. In the latest ruling, U.S. District Judge Derrick Watson in Hawaii cited President Trump’s own bigoted words, adding that the ban had not, as the administration claimed, been “cured” of religious animus. “The revised order suffers from precisely the same maladies as its predecessor,” Judge Watson wrote.
With each new executive order, pronouncement or tweet, the president continues to seek to divide our nation. He is bent on building walls instead of bridges. Whether it be the dismantling of the Affordable Care Act, the building of a border wall, or the banning of people from predominantly-Muslim countries, the president and his minions remain steadfast in wasting taxpayer money with unconstitutional flights of fancy – all in the interests of the corporate class and to the detriment of working people.
Thank goodness we still have the judicial branch to check an out of control chief executive. It’s far past time for Congress to discharge its Constitutional responsibility and more effectively block the President’s destructive acts.
