Florida - Monica Russo, president of SEIU Florida State Council, issued the following statement:

“SEIU members will be on the front lines talking to their co-workers ensuring that our more than 55,000 members and their families are educated and aware of their healthcare options during the Health Insurance Marketplace open enrollment period created by the Affordable Care Act. We will also be in our communities knocking on doors, sending mailers and holding tele-town halls focused on targeted communities around the state.

“However, while we have a laser focus on ensuring that Floridians know about their options with the Health Insurance Marketplace, we have unfinished business in regards to Medicaid healthcare expansion in Florida – a key component of the ACA. SEIU Florida will make it a point to educate and empower the nearly million Floridians who are being left behind because of the inaction of extremists in the Florida legislature. Florida House Speaker Will Weatherford and the extreme right in the Florida House decided to put politics over the work of the people and consequentially didn’t pass Medicaid healthcare expansion. We want to make sure that hardworking Floridians know who is preventing them from getting the coverage they deserve.”

SEIU Florida represents over 55,000 active and retired healthcare professionals, public employees, and property service workers in the state of Florida. SEIU members provide vital public services in Florida's hospitals, nursing homes, public schools, community colleges, municipal and county governments, malls, and universities. With over 2.1 million members, SEIU is the fastest-growing union in North America. For more information, please visit HealthierFloridaNow.org.
