Caregivers Allege State’s Largest Nursing Home Operator May Be Cutting Supplies for Stronger Earnings

Families for Better Care and 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East Host Press Teleconference on Findings and Fines

Tallahassee, FL – 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East (1199SEIU Florida) and Families for Better Care held a press conference today with State Senators Dwight Bullard, Geraldine Thompson and Jeff Clemens, Brian Lee, executive director of Families for Better Care, and nursing assistants from The Palms nursing home and Bay Breeze nursing home to discuss recent findings from caregiver interviews at 19 Consulate facilities around the state. A staggering 68% of caregivers reported an inadequate supply of adult diapers for residents. The interviews also revealed many caregivers purchase toiletries and medical supplies in order to provide adequate care to their residents.

While Consulate Health Care, Florida’s largest nursing home owner/operator, continues to make record profits and executive compensation soars, one of the company’s Tallahassee nursing home was recently fined $31,000 by AHCA for not testing blood-sugar levels of diabetic patients for weeks due to the lack supplies. Consulate Health Care is just one example of a growing trend in Florida, where the state has become the nation’s litmus test for passing bad legislation that increases profit margins, while diminishing care.
