Leaders from the worlds of labor, education, and politics were joined by clergy and the heads of numerous progressive and grassroots organizations on April 25 for the annual Bill Michelson Home Care Education Fund Benefit.

This year’s Benefit, held at New York City’s Sheraton Hotel, was also a birthday celebration for a long-time supporter of the Union, Basil Paterson. Paterson has served as an advisor, negotiator and friend of 1199 SEIU for several decades.

The Benefit helps the Fund provide training, education and employment services for 1199SEIU homecare workers. Last year over 14,700 homecare workers took educational through the Fund.

In a message for the occasion,1199 President George Gresham and Secretary Treasurer Maria Castaneda thanked Paterson. We want to express our profound appreciation and thanks to Basil Paterson,” they wrote, “not only for his many years of extraordinary service and devoted friendship to our union, but for an entire lifetime dedicated to improving the lives of millions of working families in our city and state. We cherish his leadership and wise counsel.”
