The election for Congress in New Jersey’s 3rd District is considered among the most competitive in the country, according to the National Journal, a Washington, D.C.–based political news magazine. In that race, 1199SEIU members have endorsed Shelley Adler, based on her commitment to fight to protect Medicare, Social Security and civil rights.

“Shelley knows that a new direction is needed in Washington and that we deserve a better Congress,” said Claire Wombough of Toms River, an 1199 member and certified nursing assistant at Manchester Manor Rehabilitation Center. Wombough hosted a meet-and-greet barbeque for more than 40 members and their families, who live in the Southern Jersey district, which includes Burlington, Camden and Ocean counties.

“The event crystallized the importance of electing Shelley Adler to Congress,” said Milly Silva, 1199SEIU Executive Vice President for New Jersey. “From the beginning to the end of Claire’s barbeque, Shelley connected with caregivers on a human level. She demonstrated empathy and compassion for the hard work they perform, day in and day out. It is clear that Shelley will be a champion for working-class men and women in Congress and we are proud to have endorsed her candidacy.”

Adler, the wife of the late Congressman John Adler, has four sons, who she and her husband raised with hopes of instilling the value of public service. She says she is running for Congress because working families, small businesses, senior citizens and veterans need someone who will truly be on their side.
