Vermont Homecare Providers Work with Legislature to Gain a Voice
February 13, 2013
Homecare providers in Vermont are working with the State Legislature to pass the Homecare Providers Bill (S. 59: An Act Relating to Independent Direct Support Providers). The Homecare Provider Bill will finally allow nearly 6,000 caregivers across the state to form a union to have a voice in improving the quality of care available to Vermonter. The bill would also help to develop a compassionate system for homecare clients which allows Vermont seniors and people with disabilities to live with independence, safety and dignity in their own homes.
On January 31, homecare workers and clients visited legislators for Homecare Advocacy Day at the State House in Montpelier, to share their support for the Homecare Providers Bill. The bill was the subject of Senate committee hearings the following day, where lead bill sponsor Senator John Campbell, President Pro Tempore, testified in support of the bill.
"I understand our financial restraints as a state – but I also understand our obligations as human beings,” said Campbell. “I stand behind this bill 110 percent. These men and women do very important work and deserve dignity and respect. We owe it to them.” said Senator Campbell.
