Healthcare Workers Denounce Executive Order Repealing Clean Power Plan
March 28, 2017
Repeal will result in sickness and death of Americans from toxic air pollution, and worsen the dangerous climate crisis
“Healthcare workers condemn President Trump's executive order repealing the Clean Power Plan. We strongly support all protections for clean air and water which safeguard the health of Americans. The Clean Power Plan reduces poisons from the smoke stacks of coal plants, as well as carbon dioxide which is causing the dangerous climate crisis. Toxic air pollution sickens millions, and causes 200,000 deaths every year in our country, many of them children. Experts are warning that if we do not immediately reduce heat-trapping gases, runaway climate chaos will cause food shortages, droughts, super storms, flooding, the spread of tropical diseases and worldwide conflict, threatening the economy and security of the United States. To avoid this catastrophic outcome, we will be mobilizing thousands of healthcare workers to the Climate March on April 29 to support the transition to a 100% clean energy economy with good jobs, health, security and a better future for all.” – George Gresham, President of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, the largest healthcare union in the nation.
