New study on Consulate Health Care’s dismal track record sheds light on Florida’s nursing home crisis during Long Term Care Awareness month.

TALLAHASSEE, FL – On Wednesday, November 6, 2013, legislators, seniors, caregivers and advocates will hold a press conference calling for more accountability with the nursing home industry.

Despite Florida’s nursing home industry receiving a “B”, the state has a secret that many do not know. Nursing home sanctions in Florida are at the highest levels in recent history, with one in five nursing homes on the state’s watch list, and that is not because they are leading by example. A recent study also shows that the 36% of the nursing homes run by the state’s fastest growing industry leader, Consulate Health Care, are on the Florida’s watch list “for not meeting state standards, or for not making corrections quickly enough.” Among the most alarming findings was Consulate nursing homes are using antipsychotic medications for long-stay residents at rates above the state's average in all but one of the company’s 77 nursing homes for the first quarter of 2013. Consulate Health Care’s shaky record is just one example of a growing trend in Florida, where nursing homes are choosing profits over care.
