State’s largest healthcare union joins growing opposition to closure of detox unit at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital

BOSTON, MA – Representatives of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, the state’s largest healthcare workers union, will testify today at a Department of Public Health hearing against the closure of the detox unit at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital. The union issued the following statement regarding the proposed closure prior to the 2:00 p.m. hearing at 250 Washington Street, 2nd Floor, Boston. Copies of the union’s official testimony are available by request.

“The closure of addiction services at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Seven South sends a chilling message to the community and seems to be a text book example of a hospital corporation putting the bottom line ahead of patient care and community needs. Hopefully, Partners will rethink what appears to be a serious misstep on their part – one that is troubling to their own employees and the broader community. As advocates for healthcare workers, we have heard from employees at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner who object to this plan from a moral and clinical perspective, but who are afraid to speak out for fear of reprisal by Partners.” – Jeff Hall, spokesperson, 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East
