Statement of 1199SEIU President George Gresham on Congressional Budget Office Scoring of the American Health Care Act

May 25, 2017

Earlier this month, the House of Representatives irresponsibly passed the American Health Care Act (AHCA) without an impact analysis from the Congressional Budget Office and clearly without consideration of the human cost.

Today’s CBO report confirms our worst fears; healthcare coverage will be snatched from 23 million Americans, slashing care for children, seniors, working families and people with disabilities, and denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions like cancer and diabetes, all to give a $600 billion tax cut to corporations and the wealthiest Americans.

The AHCA’s changes to Medicaid are historic in scope, with devastating implications for those most in need and for the hospitals, nursing homes, homecare agencies and healthcare workers that serve them.

1199SEIU healthcare workers will continue to fight this “anti-American” Health Care Act, hold accountable the members of Congress who betrayed their constituents by voting for this catastrophic bill and demand that the Senate come out from behind closed doors, and in a transparent process revamp the bill’s entire structure; deep cuts to coverage to pay for tax breaks for the wealthy.”
