Under the presidency of Barack Obama, we have seen some of the broadest expansion of America’s social safety net since the implementation of Lyndon Baines Johnson’s Great Society and War on Poverty of the 1960’s. President Obama’s leadership has provided healthcare for tens of millions of people, transformed the banking and auto industries, resuscitated the economy, made marriage an institution of equality and protected workers in ways unseen since after the Great Depression.

(Troy, NY) Faith and leaders from across the Capital District met in Troy, NY today to discuss issues including regional poverty, corporate accountability, and the ongoing union drive at St. Peter’s Health Partners. Attendees also discussed the tax increase in Troy and the disparity between the largest employers in the city being tax exempt while citizens are being asked to pay more.

Buffalo, N.Y.— After a long haul, Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and service workers at Elderwood Grand Island, a western New York nursing home, finally had their vote to organize certified by The National Labor Relations Board; they are now members of 1199SEIU, United Healthcare Workers East, the most powerful healthcare workers’ union in the country.

New York, NY – While millions of Americans were sleeping last night, the Senate voted to begin steps to decimate the Affordable Care Act – which provides coverage to 30 million Americans nationwide. Healthcare workers stand united in demanding a plan be in place before the ACA is demolished. The plan should at a minimum preserve insurance for people who gained coverage under the current ACA, prevent insurance companies from unfairly discriminating against patients, and preserve Medicaid funding for the states.
