Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of Freddie Gray, the 25 year old Baltimore man who died on April 19 from injuries he sustained while in police custody. We understand that the officers involved have been suspended, and that the case is currently under investigation. However, we are alarmed by the growing list of citizens injured and killed by Baltimore City police officers.

The healthcare workers of 1199SEIU are committed to caring for the lives of our neighbors and the wellbeing of our communities. We stand in solidarity with Mr. Gray’s family and community as they seek answers, and we echo their calls for justice. As a labor union strongly rooted in social and economic justice, we will continue to organize with the greater Baltimore community to call for criminal justice reform and put an end to abuses at the hands of the police.

1199SEIU calls for a full, transparent, and independent investigation, and support the U.S. Department of Justice decision to look into this case. We look forward to seeing justice served for Freddie Gray and his family.

--Lisa Brown, Executive Vice President of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, Maryland/DC Region
