Dan Maffei Supports Central New York Labor

November 9, 2012

The Cayuga County Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO held a “meet and greet” yesterday with Congressional Candidate Dan Maffei at the Ancient Order of the Hibernians in Auburn, NY. 1199SEIU members turned out to hear Maffei speak about his support for Labor and his plans to go to Washington to improve the lives of all Central New Yorkers. He told the gathering that he believes central New York is the greatest place to raise a family, and said he is running for Congress because his goal is to protect the middle class in our community.

Maffei reiterated his support for the Affordable Care Act, in contrast to current Rep Ann Marie Buerkle, who supports the Romney/Ryan Republican Budget. He expressed great disdain for Buerkle and Ryan’s budget plans for Medicare that would negatively affect seniors by forcing them to use vouchers. He views these Medicaid and Medicare as “hard earned rights after a life time of work that must never be taken away.” And he stated that any savings from the Romney/Ryan cuts would go to the richest members of our society, and do nothing to help the middle class.

When asked what it is like debating Buerkle, Dan said it wasn’t easy because of Buerkle’s lack of understanding the difference between her opinions and the facts. Which reminded him of a famous quote from his former boss Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, “Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts."

Re-electing President Obama and Dan Maffei to Congress are the union’s highest priorities in Central NY this election season. Any other result will be devastating to the future of 1199 families and healthcare jobs.
