Purple Gold Comes To Western NY
May 3, 2012
The mission of 1199SEIU’s Purple Gold progam is to engage, educate, and empower the young members of the union. The goal is to create new pathways for growth through educational workshops, new technology, social events, and mentorship opportunities.
Purple Gold targets members 35 and under. However, there every member has is a role to play. Seasoned activists and current leaders are needed as teachers and mentors.
Charlene Joyner has been an LPN at Absolut Orchard Park for almost two years. As a recent Delegate, student, wife and mom, she finds it hard to participate in some of union activities. “I want to do it all, but I can’t,” said Joyner. “I just don't have the time.
“When I heard of the Purple Gold Program starting here in WNY, I was excited because it’s a bunch of busy young people like me. It combines leadership development, community service, networking all while having a good time. Sign me up!”
Other regions of the union from Massachusetts to Florida have developed Purple Gold programs and are having a good time while helping to change the direction of their communites.
Western NY will be having its first Purple Gold organizing meeting on Monday, March 12 at 5:30pm. The event will be held at the 1199SEIU office at 2421 Main Street, Buffalo ,NY. To save your spot, please call Carla at 995-3721 or email at Carla.moorhouse@1199.org.
