Huge Nationwide Women’s Marches Again Call For Social and Economic Justice
January 23, 2018
This weekend some 200 demonstrations around the world commemorated the one year anniversary of historic Women’s March on Washington held on January 21, 2017. Last year’s event in the U.S. capital drew hundreds of thousands of participants and spawned thousands of sister marches of every size around the world. Demonstrators called for equal rights, a fair justice system, an end to the systemic oppression of people of color, fair treatment of LGBTQ persons, environmental and reproductive justice and more. Again this year, organizers insisted that the event was not a response to President Trump, but participants turned the events in to very public referenda on the Trump Administration and its antagonistic attitudes toward women, immigrants, labor, public education, the environmental movement and global solidarity. In New York City, some 200,000 demonstrators lined the western fringe of Central Park for a rally that was followed by a march down Avenue of the Americas. Signs, banners and placards of every hue fluttered above the sea of signature pink eared hats. Threading through the riot of color and themes was the central message: women have discovered their power and they are using it.
